2000 sees The Open Championship return to The Old Course, St Andrews for the Millenium Open. Superbly organised by the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, it is the world's most prestigious golf event, with an international field unmatched in any other major championship.

The 129th Open Golf Championship returns to St Andrews from Thursday 20th to Sunday 23rd July 2000. It is the tournament every golfer will want to play in and every golf fan will want to attend.

Carnoustie had all the drama with incredible scenes in the final round, as Jean Van De Velde, who led the field after rounds two and three and was five shots clear overnight, arrived at the 18th with a three shot advantage. To the astonishment of the crowd and the millions viewing around the world on television, he threw it away in the most bizarre fashion. His third shot at the 18th flew into Barry's Burn followed closely by Van De Velde who stunned the spectators by removing his shoes and socks and climbing in! He finished the hole with a triple bogey. This forced a 'three way' four hole play-off between Van De Velde, Scotsman Paul Lawrie and American Justin Leonard. A nerve wracking four holes ensued with Lawrie getting the better of his opponents by two strokes, to lift the famous claret jug.
