Corporate Clients We appreciate that companies are very busy and their staff are better occupied dealing with company matters instead of organising programs for visiting executives. We can assist by organising a full itinerary for executives, including site visits and meetings, working within guidelines and budget. Links of Scotland Golfing Vacations invite golfing enthusiasts to indulge themselves in the challenge, the history and the traditions of golf on a once in a lifetime visit to Scotland, the home of golf. Links of Scotland Golfing Vacations have welcomed satisfied golfers for this unique experience for more than 16 years, and we have testimonials from many of the thousands of guests who have enjoyed our hospitality.
The word golf is thought to have come from a Dutch word "Kolven" which was a game played with a stick and a stone on frozen canals in Holland. It is thought that a form of Kolven was introduced to Scotland by Fife fishermen on the east coast. Young fishermen would compete by hitting a pebble with piece of driftwood on their way home from the sea. There is no doubt that golf was played at St Andrews early in the 16th century, and the first documented reference to golf was the ban imposed by law by King James II in 1457 because golf was "interfering with martial arts and archery practice".
Early royal Golfers included Mary Queen of Scots, James I, her son, and James IV who is recorded as having lost a 14 shilling wager at St Andrews to the Earl of Bothwell. St Andrews was awarded the title of "The Royal and Ancient" by King William IV in 1834. Golf's rules, traditions and courtesies have been directed by the Royal and Ancient since that time, and still are today. |
