Golf is first mentioned here in the early 17th century, but a permanent course was not laid out until 1886 under the guidance of Tom Morris; 18 holes were then completed by 1889. This natural links course is acclaimed throughout the world and only the distance from the centres of population in the south have kept it from hosting many major championships. In the early part of the century, its fame was spread by Joyce and Roger Wethered who spent many holidays in Dornoch, whilst the noted golf course architect Donald Ross, was a native of the Burgh. A noted figure in the development of the club was John Sutherland, secretary for fifty-three years from 1883. |
