Bruntsfield Links is in the middle of Edinburgh now, though when originally used for golf it was on the outskirts of the city. The exact date of the founding of the club is not preserved, but the centenary was celebrated in 1861. The Bruntsfield Links Club had a match against the Gentlemen Burgess Club as early as 1802 and joint meetings were held at various times through the century. In 1819 Peter McEwan a renowned clubmaker, was appointed officer of the club. The Society, as it is now called, moved to Musselburgh and thence to its present course at Barnton.
