The wild dreams of today are the realities of tomorrow, and little did the aspiring golfers who met in Carluke in 1894 think that their dream would result one hundred years later in this Club of more than 700 members who can look back on surviving two World Wars, the advent of the motor car, radio, and the aeroplane, the arrival on the moon of a Scottish born American astronaut, and the growth of their favourite pastime into a multi billion pound business beamed by coloured pictures into every corner of the world.Nor, indeed, would they ever have imagined the first tee seriously guarded by an enthusiastic and robust ladies section with drivers at the ready at precisely 4 o'clock every Tuesday.
Nor would it even be considered that a Captain would be elected from the "Auld Enemy" - or that Santa Claus would arrive by helicopter.
But all of these things have happened.
The late John Kyle, a good friend, and Secretary for many years, always maintained - "We are only caretakers, but our aim must be to improve". It is this attitude which has protected and nurtured the Club, and I am sure will carry Carluke Golf Club into the 21st Century and for countless years beyond.
