    The Dunvegan Hotel, St Andrews

Proprietors: Jack & Sheena WilloughbyA love for the game of golf inspired Jack & Sheena to acquire The Dunvegan Hotel, a quaint friendly establishment ideally situated only "112 yards" from the 18th green of The Old Course.

The Hotel has been refurbished to a high standard, with comfortable beds and extra firm mattresses ensuring a good night's rest.

All rooms are en - suite and include power showers, colour T.V. tea / coffee making facilities and direct dial telephones.

Additionally, a full breakfast is included in the rates and can be prepared early in the morning to meet your golfing requirements.

Rooms are named and themed after the first Open Champion and the four Double Winner's of the Open at St Andrews.

A significant part of the Dunvegan's personality can be experienced in the friendly Golfers Corner Lounge Bar which offers a fine selection of beers, ales and spirits. To compliment their fine range of malts, they can offer you that often "dreamed" of Cuban Cigar. Good, fresh food is served which includes a variety of sandwiches, burgers and homemade traditional dishes, salads and our forever popular Fish 'n' Chips.

The bar is tastefully decorated and features over forty prints of various historically significant and interesting golf shots relating to The Old Course, including all The Open Winners at St Andrews since 1873. Additionally a large screen television is available and sports are continually shown live via satellite coverage. Jack, a 3rd generation Texan, and Sheena, his Scottish wife offer the very best in friendly, personalised service and enjoy getting to know their customers and talking golf with them.

The Origin Of The Claret Jug

When young Tom Morris won the Open Golf Championship Belt in 1870 for the third year in succession, it was his to keep.

The Earl of Eglington, who had presented the Belt, died in the same year - as did James Ogilvy Fairlie, the main administrator of the tournament.

The "Open" was in danger of being discontinued until Prestwick (where all the Open Championships from 1860 had been played) invited St Andrews and Musselburgh to contribute to the running and expense of the event.

£30 was raised and a Claret Jug was presented - hand engraved with a golfing scene around it.

The significance of a Claret Jug was that up to that point from the forming of the first golf clubs in the 1750's, it had become a golfing tradition that many of the social foursome matches played for or wagered bottles (and on some occasions - cases) of Claret.

For example, as the gentlemen of the Honourable Company of The St Andrews Society met at 10 of a morning on the first tee to arrange their matches, one could be heard to say:

"We challenge you to six bottles of Claret for a third!"

meaning they wanted a shot every third hole.

Claret and Port were the most popular drinks in the Clubhouse and many a strange wager was conceived in the bar after over - indulging - such as the "wag" who bet that he could drive a ball from the Old Course to Cupar (over 9 miles away) in less than 1000 shots with a supply of feather balls. He won his bet - two cases of Claret!

Scotland and France formed the Auld Alliance over 700 years ago and Scots continue to enjoy the wonderful full - bodied Clarets of Bordeaux
