The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers played first on Leith Links; they moved to Musselburgh in 1836. In 1891 they moved to their present course to the east of Gullane and the Open was played there in the following year. That was the first occasion on which the championship had been played over 72 holes and the winner was Harold Hilton, who won again in 1897 and is the last British Amateur player to win. James Braid won the Open twice here (1901 and 1906). The course is made up of two concentric rings of nine holes, with the second nine holes inside the first. It is a fair course which rewards good shots and it is highly rated amongst the best players. |
