Long, narrow at times, and often with subtle changes in direction, this testing course has been used on several occasions for the Open. Problems away from the links have prevented the Open from returning since 1975, when Tom Watson won a play-off against Jack Newton, later seriously injured in an accident. Sir Henry Cotton won his most famous Open victory here in 1937, whilst the 1953 champion was Ben Hogan who entered only this once for the Open. |
