The club was founded in 1841 and played on a 4-hole course, later extended to six at Cairntrodlie. Drives from different holes crossed each other, leading to 'frequent accidents and annoyances'. A new 9 hole course designed by Willie Park Jnr. was opened on Craigewan links in 1892 and increased to 18 holes in 1908. It is on a natural layout 'little re-arranged by man'. A second course was laid out in 1923 by Laurie Auchterlonie.
