Kingsthorpe Golf Club, Northamptonshire |
The Club - originally a 9 hole course built of the Harborough Road to the north of town - was founded in 1908 by a group of employees from the "Union Bank" now part of the "Natwest Bank" in the Drapery, Northampton. This was the result of a personal friend of the then manager being refused membership of another local golf club, apparently on account of his being considered to be in trade. This epitomises the spirit of this club to this day. In 1912 land was acquired in the area then known as Gypsy Lane. In 1914 the first 18 hole course was opened on the present sight, having been "laid out" by one of the best known architects of his day, Charles H Alison, who was secretary at Stoke Poges GC. Charles Alison went on to design courses in America and Japan. A press report at the time suggests of Kingsthorpe that "Its sandy soil, pronounced by experts to be admirably suited for golf, and the contour of the land will lend itself to making a really sporting course". This is certainly born out by the course today which provides a suitable challenge for golfers of all levels. The Club engaged the services of the second professional at Northants County Club, Ernest Hanton, who served from 1914-52. He won the German open during his time at Kingsthorpe. The club contains players of a wide social range and variety of abilities, and is extremely competitive in the spirit of a true members club. Kingsthorpe has won the Hollingsworth Trophy - considered the main team event in the county - more often than any other club, and have appeared in the last four finals. In 1995 the double was achieved winning both the Hollingsworth and the County scratch League. The Club is well known in the area for its hospitality to visiting golfers. The bar prices are extremely reasonable, and the catering provides exceedingly good value. Societies and Companies who visit us generally return year after year. The course itself is best described as a traditional "Parkland" course, built on around 75 acres, which must surely be amongst the smallest plots on which a proper 18 hole course has been built. Although not a long course, measuring a mere 5918 yards from the back tees, its undulating terrain provides a suitable challenge for golfers of all standards with SS of 69. Whilst not a hilly course, the valley that runs through it ensures plenty of sloping lies. The members believe that this is the way golf should be played. The course record of 63 is held by a current member Mr S McDonald, and has stood since 1985 (no professional has bettered this score). The eighteenth hole which brings you back to the clubhouse, is claimed by many to be "the longest 400 yards in the County" when played into wind, and is certainly amongst the finest finishing holes in the area. Rules and Regulations Visitors are obliged to observe our dress code which, requires that only very smart casual dress is acceptable in the clubhouse. Players should wear a jacket and tie when dining in the evening. Both on the course and in the clubhouse players are expected to wear collared shirts, tailored slacks or tailored knee length shorts accompanied by matching socks or sports socks. Mobile phones are NOT permitted on the course or in the clubhouse. Messages for guests may be left with the Professional or Steward who will pass them on at the earliest opportunity. You will however find a warm welcome from Kingsthorpe members who are well known for their hospitality.
